Penix, Robinson Spark Falcons’ 34–27 Victory Over Commanders

Just when you think this team has turned the wrong corner, they pull together. Sunday at Mercedes-Benz, the Falcons played a balanced football game and came away with a 34–27 win over the Washington Commanders, evening the season record at 2–2. Last week, up was down and north was south — you get the picture. But this time, they stuck together and grabbed a much-needed victory, taking full advantage of the absence of star QB Jayden Daniels.

Falcons Flip the Script

Atlanta’s offense finally woke up, piling up 435 total yards. Michael Penix Jr. led the charge, going 20-of-26 for 313 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 pick. He looked calm, controlled, and got plays off on time — a noticeable improvement that might be tied to OC Zach Robinson moving down to the sidelines and closer to his players.

The passing game opened up in a big way. Kyle Pitts and Drake London were featured heavily, with Pitts hauling in 4 catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, while London caught 8 passes for 110 yards and a score. Penix threw catchable balls, and his receivers came through, keeping the chains moving and the offense rolling.

And once again, Bijan Robinson was the rock. He totaled 181 yards of offense — 75 on the ground with a rushing TD, plus 106 receiving yards on just 4 catches. His 69-yard grab set up a quick 2-play scoring drive capped by the Pitts touchdown. When this offense needed a spark, Bijan provided it.

After being blanked last week, the Falcons’ offense came alive. Penix looked like a different quarterback, Bijan was dynamic in both phases, and London and Pitts showed what happens when they’re given chances.

Defense Holds the Line

The Falcons didn’t have to deal with the electric Jayden Daniels, but former Falcon Marcus Mariota got the start. The defense limited him to 156 yards and two scores, while Deebo Samuel Sr. was held to just 72 yards. Atlanta’s D wasn’t perfect, but it made timely third-down stops to get off the field.

The defense also came up with the game’s biggest play. Rookie safety Xavier Watts grabbed a clutch interception in the fourth quarter, helping seal the win. Add in a clock-draining Falcons drive late in the game, and Washington never got the chance to rally back.

Final Whistle

This victory snapped Washington’s recent dominance in the series and sends Atlanta into the bye week at 2–2 with some momentum. It also showed what this team can be when the offense spreads the ball, leans on Bijan, and keeps tempo. Hats off to Penix for bouncing back — from his worst pro game to his best. Game ball!

Credit the coaches, too. For one game, they made the right adjustments: getting plays in on time, feeding London and Pitts, containing Mariota, even holding another kicker competition. The tough call to let the receivers coach go seems to have sparked something.

Now it’s about using the bye week wisely. The Falcons need to tighten up on defense, clean up special teams, and cut down on mistakes. With Buffalo next, it’s time to turn this momentum into a real run at the division.
